The rogue-on-wheels, that's how we term the city's autorickshaws. The drivers often refuse to go by the meter and take commuters for a ride. But this autowallah on the south Delhi streets shatters this stereotype. He is swept by the Anna wave and won't charge you if your destination is Ramlila Maidan. Fellow autowallahs mock at him, but he's a rarity in his tribe, ready to sacrifice his daily bread for a bigger cause - the fight against corruption.
So, if you are near South Extension you might just run into this auto with the licence plate DL 1 RS 1388. The driver, Sanjay, 40, has a huge poster pasted on the back of his auto, proclaiming free service to everyone travelling to Ramlila Maidan in support of Anna.
While most auto drivers smile at the mention of Ramlila Maidan or just say Jai Ho Anna, Sanjay has gone a step ahead. "I began this free service three days ago. My mission is to get as many supporters to the Maidan to support the crusader against corruption," he said. Sanjay says he has transported at least 13 people till now.
But do some commuters just take him for a ride in the name of Anna and get down midway? Sanjay says he puts a rider for his free service. "If a passenger asks me to drop them mid-way, he has to pay up," he said.
An auto driver since 1994, Sanjay is frustrated with corruption pervading the system. "There is corruption every where, whether you want to get a licence or a ration card," said Sanjay. A father of two, Sanjay says his family is very supportive of his decision, never mind he's earning less nowadays. He won't stop his free service for Anna Hazare.
"He is fighting for us. He is staying hungry for us. It is the least we can do. We have to support him in every possible way. I am earning enough to run my house even now. And I will continue with my service till Anna fights for us," he said.
Sanjay says his fellow autowallahs mock at him. "I do not pay heed. I know that I am fighting for a cause," he said.
